Millennium (1996)

Continued from The X-Files - Season 5

Note: I would like to thank Leanne Podivan for having sent photos of her work on the episodes 'Antipas' and 'Somehow, Satan Got Behind Me'

Toby Lindala's effects house provided the makeup effects for Chris Carter's gloomy spinoff of The X-Files, which was also filmed in Vancouver. Mike Fields, Geoffrey Redkapp and Leanne Podivan were among the members of Lindala's team and all had X-Files experience.

Millennium, much like its parent series, required grisly corpse props for specific episodes, such as the decapitated head and dismembered rotten hand props in the 'Pilot' episode.

The Pilot episode also required mouth and eye appliances for the actors playing the killer's victims, who had their eyes and mouthes stitched shut.
Millennium was not as heavy on the monsters as X-Files. One of the few episodes to have one was 'Gehenna', for which Lindala's team supplied a demon. The demon was realized with a sculpted mask, chest appliances and a set of specially fabricated wings.

The rest of the demon costume was a painted bodysuit, similar to the Grey aliens that Lindala's team had provided for various X-Files episodes. The demon suit was reused again in the Millennium episode 'Lamentation.

A pair of zombie-like facial prosthetics were made for two child actors in the episode 'Weeds', representing a serial killer's hallucinations.
A mummified 'bog body' corpse dummy prop was made for 'The Hand of St. Sebastian'.
Several demon prosthetics were required for 'Somehow, Satan Got Behind Me'. All four actors playing the demons had their bodies painted to match the prosthetic appliances.

Alex Diakun's demon makeup consisting of a facial appliance with a bald cap to blend in with his painted skin. The contact lenses were made by Contour Contact Lens Ltd, which supplied the contact lenses for the original Vancouver-filmed seasons of X-Files and Millennium.

Wally Dalton'S demon makeup also consisting of a face appliance and bald cap, as well as an appliance on his back on which the custom-made wings could be fitted.
Bill Macy's demon makeup was a more elaborate face appliance, with a subtle appliance around the chest and shoulders.
A similarly elaborate prosthetic was made for Dick Bakalyan, with complimenting shoulder appliances as well.
A pair of intentionally unconvincing Grey masks were also made for the episode, from the molds originally sculpted for the 'fake Grey' prosthetics in 'Jose Chung's From Outer Space'.

The sequence, one spoofing X-Files ironically enough, also reused the dissected Grey props originally made for Gethsemane'.

Another demon prosthetic was sculpted and applied on Sarah-Jane Redmond for 'Antipas', with yet again contacts supplied by Contour Contact Lens.
A burning wound makeup fitted with air bladders was applied on actor Tzi Ma's face and arm in 'Bardo Thodol'. The air bladders gave the appearance that his flesh was throbbing on camera. A set of severed hand props were also made for the episode.
Millennium only lasted three seasons, and Lindala's team would only work again with Chris Carter on the short-lived Harsh Realm, marking the end of their professional relationship.
